Touch typing – an eligible skill for a Duke of Edinburgh Award

Recognised as a valuable life-skill, touch typing qualifies for the ‘skill’ part of either a Bronze or Silver Duke of Edinburgh Award.

Young people are required to pursue their new skill for a minimum of 3 months, devoting at least 15 hours to it; they need to set themselves targets; and they need to be assessed and signed-off. Touch Type Titans can assist in all of this and students can choose, from the variety of different ways listed below, how to pursue their touch typing skill (students should agree their plan with their award co-ordinator).

After School Course

10 week after-school course (10 x 1.5 hours)

Targets are set together at the beginning of the course and the participant (either at the end of the course or during a 1 to 1 lesson booked after the course) 3 months after the beginning of the course. The course takes place over a school term so includes either one or two weeks of lesson-free but practice-full half term, making the skill period either 11 (hence the need for an additional lesson) or 12 weeks.  This meets with DofE requirements.

Intensive Course

Intensive course (5 days, 2.5 hours/day)

Together, we set targets at the beginning of the course, Titans assesses the participant at the end of the course and then, together, we set further targets to be achieved through practice at home over the next 11 weeks.  The participant returns for a 1:1 private lesson at the end of this period for the final assessment and report (other private lessons, either class-based or remote, can be arranged during this period if required).  Targets will always be sufficiently challenging to guarantee the DofE requirement for committed weekly practice.  The tutor will ONLY sign-off if the targets are met.

Private lessons

Flexible learning

Private lessons can be taken either in a small group of friends (who may also be working towards a DofE Award) or individually and can be class-based or remote.  These lessons can be as regular/frequent as you wish but will include an initial lesson to set targets and a final lesson (3 months later) to assess progress.  Targets will always be sufficiently challenging to guarantee the DofE requirement for committed weekly practice.  The tutor will ONLY sign-off when the target is met.

Targets and assessments

The minimum target in all cases is likely to be 30wpm and 90% accuracy (an efficient touch typing speed and the level at which the skill becomes automatic and with you for life) and this is likely to take between 20-25 hours of work (lessons and/or home practice) to achieve.

Titans is able to complete the Assessors Report via the participant's booklet or directly online.  If completed online, the participants ID and DofE level is required and then the report goes directly to the participant's DofE leader for approval before being added to their DofE account.

If you would like Titans to help your child achieve a D of E Award, please mention this when completing the Booking Form.
